- Ted forgives Robin for sleeping with Barney, even though he falls out with Barney as he broke the bro-code and exceeded his own boundaries (Ep.17)
Season 4
- Robin refuses to give an opinion on Ted's nuptials to Stella. (Ep.4)
- Robin moves to Japan, only to come back. She tells Ted that she still has feelings for him, and asks him not to marry Stella as she hoped there would be a chance for the two of them when she was ready to settle down, only for Ted to be left at the altar. The fact that Ted almost married Stella, showed that this was the first of two times where he was really over Robin. She told him
"Watching you marry another woman isn't exactly something I was looking forward to. I don't know, I just thought if I ever changed my mind about marriage and kids, it was nice to know that you were there [...]
Don't get married. Look, you're rushing into this. It's like you're trying to skip ahead to the end of the book. Ted, you're the most romantic guy I know. You stole a blue French horn for me. You tried to make it rain. [...] But after all that, this is how your great romantic quest comes to an end? [...] That's not the amazing ending that you deserve. That's not Ted Mosby."
(Ep. 5) - Ted allows Robin to move into his place following her not having a job and a place to live (Ep. 7)
- Robin and Ted have fights over Robin leaving milk cartons empty and being messy. Robin says the only difference between them being roommates and dating was them having sex, the two mutually decide to become 'Friends with Benefits' which Ted later ends due to Barney's objections(Ep.12)
- Upon learning that Lily played a role in their breakup, Robin and Ted had a good talk and realised that they still weren't ready for each other, even though they were perfect for each other. Robin suggests that they make a pact to get married if they are both single at 40, in proposal style Ted asks Robin to be his 'backup wife' to which Robin replies 'A girl always dreams if hearing those words, yes, yes, a million times, yes!!". This is in stark contrast to Barney proposing to her. ( Ep 17)
- Ted creates a start-up that Robin almost thwarts by sleeping with his assistant, again over Barney's objections. She later practices client calls with him (Ep 20)
- Robin reveals to Ted that a girl Holly that he is interested in and thinks he is texting is actually Marshall and Barney. The two of them come up with a revenge plan together. (Ep 21)

- Robin briefly moves out to her new boyfriend's place. Barney makes Ted realise that he still isn't over Robin. They fight over Robin making a compromise where Robin goes to Barney before she is 40, after which she is 40. Ted reads his self letter that states "Robin is the perfect girl for you, unless she is ready to settle down she is not your girl". Barney's defence for wanting Robin is "I want to have sex with her at least one more time", unlike Ted's defence "I stole her a Blue French horn, I dated her for a year, I wanted her to be the mother of my children and spent eternity in her arms". This is in stark contrast to Barney and Robin who dated for 7 episodes where 5 highlighted serious problems between them. Ted and Robin as highlighted before had only one disagreement, one major fight, and other fights were pretty mundane. (Ep 21)
- Robin gets a job offer, and has trouble deciding, calls Ted to ask him for help calling him "the most sensible person I know". Ted tells her to follow her heart, she decides to stay for her boyfriend Don, only to find out he dumped her for the job she turned down to be with him. She moves back in to Teds place, where she almost kisses him, and bursts into laughter realising his hair is blonde. (Ep. 24)
Season 6

However Ted unlike Barney is there to help her, implying that Ted sees it as no effort whenever he helps Robin (Ep 6)
- Ted forces Robin to take up a job at WWN instead of being a 'coin flip bimbo', this action proves fruitful as it takes her to where she wants her career to go. Robin asks him to be the Best Man if she doesn't marry him. (Ep 12)
- Ted finds out she has again met her former boss, who is sexually perverted. He makes work life difficult for her. Ted goes to his place to defend her honour. (Ep 13)

Season 7
- Robin tells Ted to have believe in chemistry again and wait for the timing, saying "But Timing's a bitch" to be right to meet someone (implying either wait for them to want the same things or Tracy: who he would meet less than a year from that point), and tells him not cry during the toast like he always does. She also reaffirms their marriage pact saying "I'm all yours" (Ep 1)
- Ted is invited to go to the Architect's Ball, and deciding between who to take. Robin upon learning that Lenny Kravitz is also coming successfully gets him to take her. (Ep 2)
- Ted runs into Victoria who tells her that Robin "is so much bigger in your world than you realise". She also tells him most his relationships haven't worked out because of Robin. (Ep. 3)
- Robin has a pregnancy scare with Barney, later only to learn she is infertile. Ted is the one to notice she has been acting all depressed, not even knowing what is wrong with her creates an elaborate christmas display to cheer her up and comfort her. It's not Barney: the person who would have fathered the child, Kevin: her boyfriend at the time, and somebody who consequently dumped her for it. (Ep. 12)
- They have an argument over their contrasting personalities, eventually conceeding that it makes both of them special(Ep. 15)
- No Pressure (one of the most misunderstood episodes of the series): Robin's boyfriend Kevin dumps her over being infertile and not wanting children. Robin tells Ted what happened "He couldn't look past this, I mean who could?". Ted tells her he can because he loves her, before going back to bed. He gets up and is about to tell Robin "Let's just be friends". However she comes and makes out with him, finds out she has to be rushed onto a trip to Russia. Just as she leaves, she kisses him again and says "we'll continue this when I get back", which makes Ted excited. Robin must have come to the realisation that even if Ted gave up his dream on having children, he would never be happy which would sour their relationship and she would lose him as a friend (a thought that terrified her). When she comes back, they go on a date. Robin expressedly states that she doesn't want to resume their relationship because "you're the only thing I can count on, and I don't want to mess that up". She asks about their 40 year pact, showing she still hoped for a chance with him. Ted however cancels the pact saying that "he'd be waiting to win the lottery till she turns 40". He puts her in a tough position asking her whether she loves him, she says "no" because she doesn't know any other way to get him off. Robin eventually moves out. Marshall calls it "a rough patch", but Ted closes the door on her. He also refuses to concede to his bet with Lily. This situation mirrors the string quartet in the last episode of the first season, just that this time the effects were deeper and long lasting eventually leading to them ending up together. (Ep 16 & 17)
- Ted ignores her for weeks on end, only for her to come over to his place. Ted gives the apartment back to Marshall and Lily (Ep 18)
- Robin and Ted compete over an apartment, where Ted is angry that Robin won't concede to him. Robin pulls him aside and tells him, " In the span of one day, my engagement fell apart, I lost my best friend, my apartment and now I'm about to lose my job". Ted tells her he had no Idea to which she responds, " How could you? The one person I want to talk to most barely looks me in the eye anymore, much less returns my calls. Ted, I know it took guts to tell me you love me. And I-I know how much it hurt that I didn't say it back, but... Damn it, th-this sucks for me, too. And I-I miss you. Is there any way we could go back to normal". She later concedes the apartment to him after getting a promotion.(Ep 19)
- Ted refuses to talk, instead texts Robin when she has a near brush with death (Ep 20)
- Barney gets Ted to date other women, where he keeps visualising Robin who go and tell him to make amends with Robin. He walks out the bar where he runs into Robin
- Both of them take a pregnant Lily to the hospital and make amends (Ep 23)
- Robin pushes him to go after Victoria , a relationship she objected to after telling him, "You say want to want to have a family, you want to meet The one, but you're always chasing after the wrong women, starting with me: I told you right away I didn't want marriage or Kids, Stella had a child with a man she still loved, Zoey was married and was trying to sabotage your career and wore a lot of stupid hats. Tell me who could have been the one (Now talking about Victoria) You blew that all away to chase after some hot piece of ass (Robin)" This statement is extremely hilarious as she had massive objections to Victoria and Stella and her reaction to Stella was explosive (elaborated below). Her relationship with Ted was incredibly happy and loving, and only ended due to a disagreement in contrast to the way all of their other relationships ended. The 'marriage or kids' part is elaborated in the Tracy era. Robin was in another relationship at the time that later turned out to be more of a sexual attraction, than a genuine relationship
Season 8
- Ted successfully rekindles his relationship with Victoria. He and Robin have a friendly fight on who is happier in their new relationships, realising both of them aren't happy with their new partners (Ep. 3)
- Ted proposes to Victoria, she says "Yes, but you have stop being friends with Robin". Ted refuses to do so saying Robin is like family to him, so they breakup(Ep. 5)
- Robin starts chasing Barney in Ep. 9 to "Get him out of my system", he helps her break into Barney's apartment(Ep. 10)
- Ted forces Robin to go and confront her feelings for Barney, leading to them getting engaged(Ep. 12)
- Ted drowns his feelings for Robin by throwing himself into planning their wedding and making sure they have it as good as they want. Going with want Robin and Barney want: a band, gives him an incredible stroke of luck. (Ep. 13)
- Ted points out to Barney that Robin puts up with a lot of his antics, and she isn't cool with it. This is also the episode where Barney can't say he wants to spent his entire life with Robin(Ep. 22)
- Ted blows off a meeting as he is the only one to understand Robin's "it's stupid" actually means "it's important" with a client to help Robin find a locket that has a special meaning while Barney is off playing laser tag with her estranged father. Robin explains the meaning of the locket, when she found the case
| Robin: | I'm gonna admit something I couldn't admit until I found this..I've been having fears about marrying Barney. I mean, in many ways, he's grown up into a mature caring adult. I still don't know if he's ready for this. I still don't know if I am! But if I could find this locket-if it was still here waiting for me-that would mean that the universe wanted me to marry Barney and everything was gonna be okay. And when it was gone it was like every doubt I ever had about Barney, about myself-got dug up! I found it.. and everything's gonna be okay! |
| Robin: | This is a sign from the universe. |
| Ted: | It's not a sign from the universe. |
| Robin: | Yes, it is! The locket is just gone and you're telling me that doesn't mean anything?! You know this is a bad omen, Ted! You're universe guy! |
| Ted: | And you're skeptic girl! You're not supposed to believe any of that! |
| Robin: | Maybe I've grown skeptical of being skeptical. This is a sign! |
| Ted: | You're doing the right thing marrying Barney. The universe isn't sending you some message. [Rain starts to pour] As we know from science, rain is liquid water in the form of droplets which had condensed from atmospheric vapor and then precipitated. It's not a sign. |
| Robin: | Ted, this is a sign and you know it! I mean the universe is screaming at me right now! How can you of all people ignore that? |
| Ted: | Because maybe its dumb to look for signs from the universe..maybe the universe has better things to do. Dear God, I hope it does. Do you know how many signs I've gotten that I should or shouldn't be with someone..and where has it gotten me? Maybe there aren't any signs. Maybe a locket's just a locket..a chair is just a chair. Maybe we don't have to give meaning to every little thing. Maybe we don't need the universe to tell us what we really want. Maybe we already know that..deep down. |
Following this conversation, she reached for Ted's hand and looked at him with sad longing eyes. Implying deep down she wanted him. Ted realised that he had to move away from New York to not come in between Robin and Barney. Lily finds out about his decision to move to Chicago and tells him the story of the locket:
Season 9 (Robin and Barney's wedding weekend)
- Barney is angry that Robin and Ted were holding hands, and replaces him as his best man, going against Robin's wishes to have Ted as the best man. Ted reveals that even though he has feelings, he wouldn't do anything to come between them. He therefore reinstates Ted as the Best Man (Ep. 4)
- In a flashback, Marshall pushes Ted to ask Robin out at a time Barney was planning to propose to her. Ted reveals he's not in a rush and will let it happen when it does. (Ep.9)
- Ted and Robin get Barney drunk, and get him to dish out his secrets, Ted holds Robin getting Barney further drunk, "subtle clues and the bar tab are just two things you just don't pick up". Ted is also upset that he paid for everything when they were dating, despite her family being massively wealthy (Ep 15)
- A massively drunk Barney goes wandering, detailed in the Barney page. Ted and Robin walk through the beach, talking about his previous relationships and Ted reveals to Robin the real reason he broke up with Victoria, having told her "we wanted different things" earlier. Ted unlearns the lesson of "Let go", which learnt that if you love something, you can't let it go forever. Therefore letting Robin go meant that he was accepting of her and Barney getting married not that he and Robin will never happen. This is also what allowed him to have a very successful relationship with Tracy (Ep 17)
- Robin after having a talk with her mother realises she should be the man she feels safe with, and starts thinking about Ted (Ep. 20)
- Robin unsuccessfully tries leaving Barney at the altar Ted refuses to do so as he had already "let go" of Robin, where and doesn't want to ruin another wedding. Running off with Robin would also would ruin his friendship with Barney. It also proves to be a good decision as it allows Barney and Robin's relationship to run its course, as I've elaborated earlier their relationship ending wasn't a question of "Why" but a question of "When". Robin and Ted had this conversation as he refused to elope with her.
Robin: I mean look me in the eye and tell me why you shouldn't be with that guy. Ted: Because I'm not that guy anymore. Robin: Then why did you work so hard to find me my locket? Ted: It was a wedding gift! Robin: Stop it! Ok, I know you better than that! It was more than a wedding gift. Ted: Maybe it started out that way. Maybe some part of me thought... Robin: ...That you still loved me. Ted: Maybe. But the truth is..I don't love you like that anymore. And you don't love me. You love Barney. And if you think I'd ever be part of ever screwing that up like that then maybe you don't know me at all Robin
As I elaborated in the 'No pressure' incident, Robin only said 'No' to get herself out of a difficult situation. In this case, Ted actually meant what he said. If it were in other contexts it would be Ted turning down Robin's proposal and telling her he doesn't love her with him actually meaning it. Robin tries running off on her own, bumps into Tracy who has a talk with her and she decides to stay with Barney. Why? She was rejected by the man she tried to run off with and she still has feelings for Barney, which Ted hammer into her by his words and most probably the 'graduation goggles' theory of hers.
Tracy era
While Robin and Barney's marriage coincided with Ted and Tracy's relationship, it was only for a short part. Hence it will be called the Tracy era.
Robin, Barney and Ted are at the bar discussing Ted's impending nuptials to Tracy in a very elaborate century in France in September 2015. Robin's first question is "How much are you spending this wedding?", and her facial reaction implies she is jealous. Robin looks relieved as she goes to get drinks, as she needs to get away from Barney: with whom she presumably was in a serious fight with and Ted: who she knows is slipping further away from her. Tracy comes in to tell him that the wedding needs to be cancelled as she's pregnant. Robin turns behind with the look of both shock and jealousy as Barney smiles. She asks Barney what's going on and he replies "She's getting a boob job", implying Tracy is pregnant. Barney smiles Robin doesn't. Barney also admits their marriage is going badly.
In the group get together the next year at Ted and Tracy's place, Robin looks visibily awkward. That is where they announce that they are got divorced (something that was inevitable), Barney downplays their divorce as " a very successful marriage that lasted only three years". Lily announcing that she is pregnant with their third child makes it even more difficult for Robin as she knows Lily and Marshall will be even more occupied. Being close to Ted means coming between him and Tracy, and there is no two questions about it with Barney.
Robin comes to the Halloween party and sees Barney back to womanising and is stunned but not affected, as it was predictable. Robin see's Ted and Tracy kiss in the spot where she and Ted had theirs for the first time, causing her to feel depressed: a feeling compounded by the fact that Ted has one child already with probably another one already on the way. This is quite ironic given she told Ted "I'm the wrong girl", and "I don't want marriage or kids", to see him with his unwed probably pregnant partner (just engaged) and knowing he already has a daughter. Her depression is compounded by the fact of knowing that even if she was with him, she wouldn't be able to bear a child and he's the only man with whom she's wanted children (elaborated previously)
She is estranged from the group telling Lily "The gang? Do you know who the gang to me is Lily? Here's what the gang is: the gang is a married couple I never see anymore about to have their third kid, it's my ex-husband hitting on slutty cops r-right in front of me and it's the guy I-I probably should have ended up with, with the beautiful mother of his child, who in their right mind would call that group of people the gang". Though she is shown having drinks with Lily the following year. (Bad crazy)
Following this, she immerses herself into her career travelling all over the world, when she runs into Ted almost 4 years later. Where in a deleted scene tells him she's done with travelling, settling to being an anchor and has 5 new dogs. Which means she's ready to settle down, she tells him that she should've ended up with him and doesn't wish she made the pact with anybody else. However Ted gently let's her down. She also has an immediate liking to his daughter Penny given the amount of jealousy she felt at her conception.
Later the year, Ted and Tracy get married where she reluctantly comes to everybody's (except Tracy's: who persuaded her) surprise, she doesn't even come to the birth of Barney's daughter.
The happenings of 2020-2024 are unknown, except that in 2021 Barney pulls of a prank which everybody except Tracy is witness to and 2022 Tracy publishes a book at a big ceremony.
Tracy's death: 6 years reunion
What about Tracy?
Conclusion
- Having a strong friendship
- Being supportive of the other
- Complementing and Balancing each other
- Loving each other's company
- Laughing with each other: they have their mock salutes joke that nobody else understands or likes
- Being able to work as a team
- Having a deep personal bond
- Giving each other space, even if it meant having to tolerate the other in a different relationship. Something Robin and Barney never did to each other.
- Both having pursued each other equally, there is a tilt towards Robin, showing that Ted wasn't in constant pursuit of her.
- Being able to work as a team
- A strong love that survived their highs and lows
